I went to a Kurt Bestor Christmas concert last night. I was impressed by his versatility as an artist and as a composer. He had an orchestra and a band (electric bass, drums, woodwinds & sax, acoustic & electric guitar) and played both exceptionally well. He played soft solo piano songs, loud rhythmic songs, a 1930s/40s swing song, a jazz piano solo, movie themes, a celtic tune, jazz improvisation with the band, vocal works, an original vocal composition, classical pieces and more. It was a testament to the versatility that a well-trained musician can have. He also had with him some of the most talented musicians I've seen. I've been thinking about narrowing in on a specific style of music, even a specific instrument. But last night I saw an artist who was skilled in multiple genres and could do it all, and he did it very well.
