The Human Experience

The eyes tell the story
of a person's life,
sharing secrets
words can never speak

Look into my eyes and you will see
stories of pain;
memories of joy,
brokenness and healing

You might even wonder
what it's like
to see the world through these eyes;
how it feels to be me

The human experience,
the one we are all having,
is not as widely varied
as it may sometimes seem

There's so much that you and I
have both felt; have both experienced
Though the exact causes may be different,
the emotions are the same

I know what it is to laugh,
to hurt,
to want to run away from something
or towards it

I think you know those things, too
I think you've felt alone,
the way I have at times
I think you've felt sad

I think you've found the strength
to face some of your demons,
but others still haunt you
I'm that way, too

And I think that, wherever and whoever you are,
there's something I can learn from you
And something I can teach you
Maybe someday we'll connect

Maybe we've always been connected,
even if we've never met
Maybe disconnection and isolation
are only illusions

Maybe someday we'll understand
that we were never alone
Because we are both here, you and I,
on this planet we call home
